I had to retake this class with a different (this) textbook, so I am in a unique position for comparison. Compared to "Introduction to Mass Communication: Media Literacy and Culture" by Stanley J. Baran, this book spends little time on theory and in-depth analysis, choosing instead to waste massive amounts of time on trivia about each medium and on explaining the obvious, like "you use Snapchat in your daily life!" and "VR exists!" The concept of media literacy and the essential theories on which it was built are neglected altogether. If you really want a solid foundation in mass communications, avoid this book.
In regards to the product, it arrived on time. There were s few rips and tears from previous owners and also, many pages were bent and the cover page also was bent and has creases. Previous owners also written small notes on some of the pages and there were a few highlights as well. However, they are not hard to ignore so, I didn’t really have any issues with the product in general.I bought this book for one of my classes and, while I wasn’t really interested in the concepts within the book at first, I found that it helps in many different classes other than just a communication course. Many of the subjects discussed in the book was very interesting as well.
Bought this for my Mass Communications course. It's pricey, but even more pricey at my college bookstore.Compared to other books for similar courses, this one is a less painful read. It's written in a more conversational tone and is much easier to digest. It has graphs and charts that are helpful for remembering key concepts, vocab/key point definitions, as well as a timeline before each section and a summary/bullet-list after each section. It's also chocked full of color photos.Overall I gave it a 4/5 because while it's a good, useful book that sucks less than some of its counterparts, I feel like they could have dramatically cut the cost by pulling out some of those color photos. I don't really need a picture of a box-office hit or someone using an Ipad... I DO really need the $110 I dropped for the book.
This was my first time renting a book. Needed this book for my class for Spring 2017 semester. Instead of purchasing the book at my school's bookstore or buying the book altogether, renting was a great option for me because it was cheaper and I have no need for it since the class is finished. The book I received was brand new, which was a bonus. I already shipped it back and the process was simple.
I borrowed this book from Amazon because i alone needed it for a semester and it was really expensive. It is the best discussion I have ever made.THANK YOU AMAZON!!
I read this for school. This book is super dull. The history of each type of media was pretty interesting, but other than that it was a struggle to get through.
Needed for a class, it serves its purpose with no complaints from me.
Condition was rough. But compared to buying it from school for $180, I cant complain!
